Career Change - Art Or Science?

Changing career is not easy! I guess you may have already found that one out for yourself.  You are probably going round and round in circles, hating your job, getting stressed out, but somehow not being able to get off that career merry-go-round and make the change you need.

So how is it that you keep yourself so stuck?   Here are two of the main reasons:

Tunnel vision

When you have worked in one job or career for a while, you begin to get tunnel vision and this stops you from seeing anything other than what lies straight ahead.  When you try to think about alternative career ideas, you start from the basis of what you already do and are familiar with.  It is a bit like exploring a dark room with a narrow beamed torch or flashlight.  The light only illumines a narrow range ahead of you and much of the room remains in darkness.  You just don't see what lies outside the range of the beam of light - and similarly just can't see other career options.

The formula approach

You assume that the solution to your career change challenge is a simple matter of adding up skills and experience and that somehow, this will lead you to the magic career solution.  Yes, an awareness of your skills, interests and experience is useful, but  this rather 'scientific' approach  does not help you to tackle the problem of you career in depth.  I believe it needs a more creative approach - career change is much more of an art than a science.

So what's to be done about it?  If you want to give your career change plans a new lease of life, read on...

360 degree vision

I challenge you to open your mind to new possibilities.  Adjust your torch from narrow beam to wide beam and take a good look round in every direction to see just how many career options are out there.  Make the first stage of your career change a period when anything goes.  Nothing will be ruled out, and anything and everything that appeals to you in any way is put on the table as a possibility to explore.

The lateral thinking approach

Don't expect your career change research to be just a matter of collecting information and adding it all up.  Imagine what you would do if you were starting out without the weight of your current career history behind you.  What would you do?  Instead of starting with what you know, try listing a range of really unlikely careers for you that you just like the sound of.  Start by being contrary and considering the most unlikely options.  Don't expect the answer to your career change to be obvious - it may leap out at you from an unexpected place.

The best approach to changing careers is one that shakes you out of the narrow box you have got locked into and gets you to explore your career change options from a new perspective.

Home Insurance - Wannabe Chefs

You know what it's like, you've seen your favourite chef on TV try something new on their program, and there's that part of you that says to yourself "I could do that"

Indeed, according to a recent survey, over 62% of us prefer to cook while watching our favourite chefs on TV.

Before you reach for the tenderizer and the sharp knives, think about the effect your culinary adventure could have on your...home insurance?

Yes, it may sound ridiculous, yet every year there are reports of wannabe chefs causing chaos in their own kitchens, which is leading to an increasing number of claims on their home insurance.

In fact, over 6 million people a year suffer injury or cause damage to their kitchens while trying out cookery techniques they've seen on television.

Accidents can vary from slicing their fingers while trying to quickly chop to attempting to blowtorch the top of a crème brulee with a torch that, let's face it, is better suited for when you're looking to do some plumbing.

According to research carried out by a leading home insurance provider, wannabe chefs are costing the industry approximately £5 billion in household damages, and for those who don't have house insurance this can be a very costly venture in the kitchen.

Three-quarters of those surveyed said they would still attempt complex cooking techniques even though they described their cooking skill levels as 'average' or 'novice'.

Worryingly, over 85% of respondents said they leave their kitchens unattended while they check the television, with a further 10% injuring themselves in the mad dash to keep up with the recipe.

Damage can range from watermark damage caused by steam, crack and chips on surfaces as a result of adventures in tenderizing and personal injuries, usually involving a knife or hot pan handle.

In addition, over 70% of those surveyed do not keep a fire extinguisher handy, whilst a quarter of those who had accidents have caused damage to themselves or their appliances.

The advice from the industry appears to be not to try anything too complex, regardless of your ability level, and to ensure that your house insurance policy includes some form of accidental damage cover alongside your buildings and contents to cover those little accidents in the kitchen.

Omron Digital Pedometer Review

One of the most popular pedometers on the market today is the Omron Digital Pedometer. Of the Omron Pedometer Range the Omron HJ 112 Digital Pedometer is by far the most sought after. The best way to source information on a Pedometer before buying one is to read what other people who have purchased one already have to say about the device.

Shelley, who purchased the Omron Digital Pedometer on the 23rd of January, 2008 says she bought it because it was rated number one in the consumer reports she read. With just four big buttons on the front, it is very easy to use and is very light. She said that she could wear it on her belt, in her pocket or in her purse and it still accurately measured the steps. She highly recommends it to anyone who wishes to lose weight and enjoyed the fact that it stored the previous day's number of steps which enabled her to set a goal for herself by attempting to beat the previous day's record.

Samuel from Kenosha says he has been attached to pedometers for a couple of years now, he said that he has gone through at least 12 pedometers and has had numerous problems with them. His goal was to take 10,000 steps in a day and having seen the Omron digital Pedometer at Walgreen's he thought he would give it a try. Like Shelley, Samuel also was amazed by the Omron's sensitivity as he to could wear it not only on his belt but in his pocket to.

Mannish who also purchased the Omron Digital Pedometer made a note that the batteries seemed to last for about six months, he says that on all the pedometers which he has used this one he has used for the longest and is currently managing to fit in 100,000 steps in a week. Once again he also enjoys the fact that he can just put in his pocket and use it discreetly.

It is very difficult to find a review of the Omron Digital Pedometer which is negative apart from some very small minor problems such as that it needs a screwdriver to replace the battery. The Omron Digital Pedometer seems to be the ideal Pedometer if one is serious about measuring their daily steps accurately.

How to Lose Body Fat Fast - High Intensity Body Fat Blow Torch

Everyone wants to have a tight body, six pack abs, and rock hard muscles. They want to learn how to lose body fat fast, too, because summer is upon us, and the beach is calling for us! Before you crank up that treadmill, stationary bike, or lace your running shoes for a morning jog, you might want to consider a completely different approach...

High Intensity Body Fat Blow Torch

Many people make this mistake: they take an hour or two out of their day to make sure they maximize their workout efforts to burn the most amount of calories possible. This is a great idea! And the heart behind it is good enough. However, there is a better way.

What if there was a way to burn calories throughout the entire day, strengthen your heart, and still have an hour to an hour and a half left over to do whatever else it is you want to do? It takes dedication, hard work, and lots of rest, but you can absolutely torch body fat away quickly with high intensity, full-body exercises that will have your heart pumping, and your muscles working within 30 - 45 minutes. Below are just some of the basic resistance types that you can use when doing full-body exercises.

Body Resistance

Since many people don't have access to a gym, they use the excuse that they can't get a great workout in because they don't have all the special toys. The toys aren't necessary. There are dozens of exercises that you can do with just your body weight. You can alternate lower body and upper body exercises to get a great cardiovascular exercise in that will also strengthen and tone your entire body.

Dumbbell Resistance

You can go purchase a set of dumbbells for fairly inexpensive (maybe even find a friend who's getting rid of some) and get a great workout regimen started. This can add tons of different exercise variations at home, and you can even blend the body resistance with the dumbbells to create a great workout.

Here are just a few variations of a full body workout that I would recommend. It would also not even take more than half an hour to kick start your body's metabolism, and ultimately burn more calories than a regular two hour workout at the gym.

1. Do one set of body squats (maybe a set of 12 - 15, depending on your fitness level) and in between squats, do a set of push-ups. Repeat this for 3 - 4 sets.
2. Do one set of walking lunges (10 steps per leg) and then alternate with dumbbell curl-and-presses. Repeat for 3 - 4 Sets.
3. Do one set of dumbbell rows (12 reps per set) and alternate with reverse crunches. Repeat for 3 - 4 sets.
4. Do one set of dumbbell curls (or concentration curls - 12 reps per set) and alternate with tricep kickbacks or extentions. Repeat for 3 - 4 sets.

This is an extremely short, but intense workout that you can do for 3 days a week. I recommend that you do this for 3 weeks, and then alternate using different exercises that target the same body parts.

Warm Up Exercises For Cardio

For rapid weight loss, cardio exercises must be an integral part of your routine. But before you jump into them full steam, you need to properly warm up. Warm up provides an transition period from your resting state to the full intensity of your workouts. During this period, there are two essential steps that you need to perform.

Two Essential Steps For Warm Up

Stretching

It is important to have a range of motion in your limbs during your cardio exercises. The best way to accomplish this is through stretching. The main purpose of stretching is to increase flexibility in your joints. Since flexibility declines as you age, this is even more important as you grow older.

Some basic parts of your body to stretch are your neck, shoulders, back, quads and hamstrings. These parts are where injuries and soreness frequently occur, so at a minimum you want to at least stretch them.

While stretching also make sure you are taking deep breaths to help you relax and increase oxygen to your blood cells. Also practice maintaining proper posture during each stretch and avoid locking out your joints.

Slow Walking

Warming up your body is essential before you start your intense cardio. The best way to do this is by slow walking for at least 5-10 minutes. If you are in a gym, you can use a treadmill.

Also if you are working out in a cool environment, you should give yourself a longer period of time to warm your body up.

Slow walking should also be included even if you are just planning a brisk walk. Even though this is a low impact aerobic exercise, you can still injure yourself.

After completing these two steps, you should now be ready to go into the endurance phase of your cardio exercises and start burning that extra fat.

Aussie Creme Brulee Recipe

This collection of recipes has been developed to be simple and budget friendly, "inspired" by the tastes of your restaurant favourites, perfect for the amateur chefs in all of us.

Leave the professional tips and tricks to the professionals, but let the professionals inspire the rest of us.
Aussie creme brulee is basically creme brulee with an Anzac bikkie base. It gives the dessert a little bit more substance, and I think the crumbly texture and sweetness of the bikkie really takes the custard and caramelised sugar flavour to a new level.

I've been super stoked to try this idea and it actually worked the first time around, well almost...my base was a little soggy as I was overly excited and didn't think to "bake it blind" first. The method below rectifies my error, but even with the sogginess the flavours were definitely there.

Enjoy!

Aussie Creme Brulee

Ingredients:

- 400 ml pure cream
- 6 egg yolks
- 1/2 cup sugar (raw or white)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 cups Anzac biscuits, crumbed (about 6 biscuits)
- 3-4 tbs butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- pinch of salt

Method:

- Preheat oven to 180â°C.
- In a mixing bowl, using your hands, mix the Anzac biscuit crumbs and the butter until the crumbs stick together.
- Layer the mixture evenly across the base of four small (5 oz) ramekins. I didn't have any, so I used short flat tea cups (pictured). Just make sure whatever you use is small and shorter than it is wide, as you will have to fill it to the brim with your custard. Cover the entire base and flatten it as much as you can, should be about 2 mm thick.
- Bake in oven for approximately 10 minutes, until the bases are set. Remove and let cool.
- In a pan or pot, heat the cream until it is hot but not boiling.
- In another mixing bowl, gently combine egg yolks and sugar, but do not whisk. Slowly add hot cream, stirring constantly until sugar and eggs are completely dissolved. Add vanilla and salt and mix thoroughly. Strain out any remaining solid bits.
- Pour custard into bases, filling the cups all the way to the top. (If you don't, it will be very difficult to caramelise the sugar on top at the end).
- Place cups in a deep baking dish and fill the dish with hot water so that it comes about halfway up the cups. Bake in oven (still at 180â°C) for about 30-40 minutes until the custard is set.
- Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature. Refrigerate until chilled.
- Sprinkle brown sugar on tray lined with baking paper and dry in oven for a few minutes. Remove and break up the clumps of sugar using a rollin pin or the base of a cup. Set aside.
- When ready to serve, sprinkle brown sugar generously on top of custards. Place under hot broiler for 3-4 minutes to caramelise the sugar. Alternatively, use a torch. Remove and serve.

Create Your Own Tiki Torches For Your Summer Luau

When I published the Summer Ideas Report, I had no idea what kind of response I would get. It seems that having a Luau is going to be a hot item this year. But before everyone wants to run out and buy Tiki torches for their backyard, I thought I would teach everyone how to make them.

First, you will need to get the right supplies. Now, as always if you are creative and inclined to do your own crafts then you can probably figure out your own design. But, this is going to be a simple design that looks great nonetheless.

Things You Need

Bamboo Poles with at least a 3" Diameter

#1 Gauge Round Reed

½" or 1" Rawhide Strips

Sunjel Gel Fuel

Knife

Saw

Once you get your supplies, which you can easily find online if you just Google the items you need, go outside on your deck and kick off your shoes. This process is not going to be a grueling one. And if you get yourself a cup of coffee or a nice glass of tea, you'll be done in no time and ready to show off your work.

The Bamboo Poles

You'll need about a five foot length of Bamboo for each Tiki torch you want to make. So, if you buy ten foot length poles then you'll be fine simply cutting them in half. Using your saw, make one foot cuts in one end of the pole so that you have at least six separate sections. This is where you'll make your weave and the Sunjel Gel Fuel will sit.

#1 Gauge Round Reed

Close to the end of your cuts, tie a 4" diameter of round reed. This will serve as a base for your weave and where your Sunjel Gel Fuel will sit. It's better if you tie the reed on the inside of the six separate sections so that you have a stronger base. Cross two lengths of round reed through the bamboo sections and around your base reed so that it strengthens the base and there won't be any slippage at all. Tie it off at the end with your tie on the inside of the torch area.

Tie another length of round reed just above the 4" base tie. The opening will be approximately 8" so that you can easily place your Sunjel Gel Fuel inside your torch. Place the reed once again on the inside of the torch. Again, cross two lengths of round reed through the bamboo sections and around the base reed.

The final tie of round reed will be at the top of the torch area. It will also be an 8" diameter just like the tie at the bottom. Now you can see the torch area start to take form. The next thing to do is begin weaving your rawhide strips.

Rawhide Strips

Just above your bottom round reed rung, start weaving rawhide strips through the bamboo sections. As in weaving, alternate the rawhide strips with each strip you weave. That creates your design so that it really begins to look like a Tiki torch. It will take about eleven rawhide strips to complete your weave and then you are nearly done.

You can simply stick the torch in the ground about a foot and your torch will stand just fine. But, there are other designs you can create as well. I've seen the bottoms of the bamboo cut as well to create a four to six leg base that will help the torch stand. Of course, in that case you will want to begin making your torch with a longer length of bamboo.

As always, you can create any design you want. So, simply plan what you want and follow through. Diagonal designs are beautiful. Taller torches are just fine. Anything goes when you put your mind to the craft and make it happen.

If you've done everything right, you are ready to set your Sunjel Gel Fuel down in the torch and light it. Most Tiki torches you will buy have a metal insert with a unique top that has a wick. You don't need that when you place a can of Sunjel Gel Fuel inside the torch. It's a metal can that will burn safely. And if you place Citronella Sunjel in the torch, you can even keep the bugs away.

You'll have a beautiful Tiki torch flame that you will love showing off because you made it yourself. Now, have a luau and invite all your friends. You'll be the life of the party. And the Summer Ideas Report I wrote and give away as a gift to anyone who wants it will show you how to plan for the rest of the luau as well.

This is not the case with the Nokia 5030 Graphite. With its standard battery, you can enjoy your favorite tunes on the built-in radio for as much as 24 hours.

- XpressRadio

This mobile radio feature is like no other among mobile phones. Aside from the powerful internal FM radio antenna and the built-in loudspeaker, the phone has dedicated buttons for fast FM station searching and the loudspeaker activation. This allows you to enjoy the FM radio at any time with friends and family wherever you may be.

From cricket to soccer, from breaking news to showbiz, and from rap to classical music, the Nokia 5030 Graphite will definitely make you go radio gaga.

Slugging It Out In The Trenches

In an effort to introduce a shaft of sunlight into a particularly gloomy conversation, I recently asked a gardening acquaintance of mine to explain the difference between a slug and a snail.

For the next twelve minutes and seven seconds, this horticultural monomaniac held forth on the most minute and inconsequential differences between gastropod molluscs with rudimentary or no shells and gastropod molluscs with well developed spiral or whorled shells. When he finally ran out of breath, I swallowed hard, took three precautionary steps backwards, and told him that a slug is a snail that can't afford a mortgage.

Instead of smiling as I had done when I had first unearthed this daft definition in a dog-eared copy of 'The Readers Digest' (dentist's waiting room edition), he ground his dentures together, cracked his calloused knuckles, and growled so raucously that the button almost exploded from his collar.

He went on to catalogue in some detail the manifold acts of vandalism perpetrated by these 'horticultural thugs' who, he said, spend their entire daylight hours skulking plumply under stones, ruminating darkly on last night's grim destruction and this night's planned assaults.

He proceeded to ridicule the 'green-wellied wimps' who nightly sprinkle little handfuls of slug pellets around vulnerable flowers and vegetables; and the poor drunkard who meanders home each night clutching a bottle of beer with which to entice and drown the occasional slug foolish enough to mistake his little beer traps for hospitality vats.

'I have suffered enough from the same blasted slugs over the years without starting to buy drink for them,' he said. 'There's only one answer to those brutes...all out military action!'

His eyes grew incandescent with malevolent glee as he described his nightly sorties into the flowerbeds and lettuce patches where, armed with a commando style torch and a jumbo-sized barrel of table salt, he would venture forth in search of the enemy.....a lethal avalanche of sodium chloride cascading inexorably on the masticating molluscs ...

'O little slug thy hapless play my thoughtless hand has swept away.'

'I have suffered enough from the same blasted slugs over the years without starting to buy drink for them,' he said. 'There's only one answer to those brutes...all out military action!'

Grinning maliciously, he described in graphic detail a fiendish plan, which he had been working on in the privacy of his horticultural bunker. I cannot recall the preliminary tactical manoeuvres, but remember that they culminated in him leaping gymnastically from the top of a hawthorn hedge and landing squarely on an unsuspecting black slug just as it was about to devour an equally unsuspecting French marigold.

Chilled to the marrow by his demonic laugh, I suddenly remembered that I had parked on a double yellow line. So, wishing him well, I vaulted over his rustic fence and fled.

On my way home, I pictured him somersaulting and cartwheeling hysterically among the broad beans and the brassicas as he celebrated each decisive victory over those diminutive moonlight marauders.

While walking through our local market some months ago, I caught sight of a particularly ostentatious display of French marigolds. Acting on impulse, I purchased three dozen and planted them out that evening. On the following morning I went out into the garden to admire the results of my debut as Capability Brown Mark 11.

Would you believe it? My proud marigolds had vanished! Yes, totally! All except three pathetic looking survivors with broken necks and tattered stems. On closer inspection, I discovered the unmistakable, tell - tale slime trails leading triumphantly into the adjoining hedgerow. As one gardening writer described them: "The obscene graffiti of a night's destruction... adding insult to injury."

Apoplectic with rage, I was looking around for something to kick hard and often when suddenly, through the thick black smoke and suffocating stench of mental cordite, I conjured up the image of my gardening friend with his beaming torch and his gigantic barrel of table salt.

"Then seek your job with thankfulness and work till further orders, If it's only netting strawberries or killing slugs on borders."

With these inspirational words of Kipling ringing loud in my ears, that night I too joined the ranks of the horticultural storm-troopers and sallied forth armed and ready to slug it out with that ghastly gardening gastropod : The Slug.

'Slugging It Out In The Trenches' is taken from 'Apples on a Sunny Shelf'. See: [http://www.assignmentsplus.com/garden-pests.html]

Scuba Diving and How to Get Started

Whether you are interested in scuba diving as merely a one time adventure for your next tropical vacation, or you want to make it a serious hobby or occupation, you have to begin somewhere. Scuba diving is something that you cannot teach to yourself, nor should you try. In order to have a safe and enjoyable scuba diving experience you should make sure that you have the proper training and possibly even certification before you jump in.

The first thing that you can do to prepare yourself is to make sure that you are physically up to the challenge. Although people of all ages and abilities can participate in scuba diving, you need to be at a certain level of fitness and you should also be a decent swimmer. If you are unsure of your fitness level you may want to talk to your doctor before participating in scuba diving.

For those who are simply going to try scuba diving as a one-time thing on a vacation, you can get a very basic course at many resorts and dive shops. This will enable you to dive with proper supervision in a safe environment. But, if you plan on making scuba diving a lifetime hobby, you will want to go at least a few steps further and get certified by one of the recognized certification training agencies such as SSI, PADI, and NAUI, among many others.

Basic Certification for scuba diving involves not only work in a swimming pool it also involves written class work and exams to test your knowledge. You can usually do this classroom work at a local community college or even a diving school. However, for your Open Water certification you will need to be somewhere that diving is in season or in a tropical area. Some people actually travel to the tropics for this portion of their certification.

In order to obtain full certification you must be at least 15 and you can get limited certification for those who are 10 through 14 years old. There are also classes for younger children which will get them ready for certification when they are older.

Diving courses will help you to learn about how to select, care for, and use the scuba equipment. You will also learn safe diving practices, breathing techniques, and other skills which will make your diving experience much more enjoyable.

If taking a scuba dive sounds like the adventure for you, take a deep breath and dive right in.

What Sets Nike Shoes Apart From Competition?

There are thousands of topics available as long as we talk about Nike shoes, such as, what Nike Air Max shoes series is, the history of Nike shoes, and etc. But have you think of why we always talk about it? Here comes our topic: What sets Nike shoes apart from competition?

Among varies of sports footwear competition, why Nike stands out and wins popularity worldwide:

1. Quality
No matter how much things have changed, one thing will never change, that is, the principle why we buy shoes. What we purchased is always the quality, the comfort. Above all the factors that affect our final decision, the quality of shoes always comes first. Just imagine, without a comfortable shoes, how can we go somewhere and be someone.
2. Fashion
No one can resist the temptation of fashion. Instead of being conservative and complacent, Nike works hard to establish sports shoes with up-to-date style. It doesn't only meet the needs of young people, but also the requirements of everyone including child and other people.
3. Technology
It is 21st century which means it is a high-tech era; it is a world fulfilled with competition as well. As Nike is proud of its innovation, it never stops surprising us by bringing new technology to its shoes, as my last article "Nike Releases New Technology Torch".
4. NIKEiD
Different people have different interests, no company can create one thing that could fit everyone`s demand, thus the existence of NIKEiD became naturally and necessarily. It enables us to customize shoes purchased from Nike and at the same time, made the customer the designer as we change and add a personal look and feel to selected sportswear.

Perhaps you have some other reasons, all in all, all the factors made Nike shoes set apart from competition. Details make thing perfect.

Can You Do Isometric Exercises With High Blood Pressure?

What health risks if any are associated with doing isometric exercises? It has been found that when performing isometric exercises that the heart rate is only slightly increased, with little to no oxygen increase. In addition there is also little to no increase of blood flow to the area being exercised. Somehow, with these two combination's there is an increase in blood pressure.

Because of this doctors do not recommend isometric exercise to people that have high blood pressure because those with weak blood vessels or heart trouble could rupture a blood vessel or get irregular heart beats. In contrast, exercising with weights does not seem to have the same consequences so is safer for those with high blood pressure. You must remember to breathe when performing these exercises, holding your breath will also increase your pressure.

On the flip side of this is a program that some are doing that claim is lowering their blood pressure. It's a form of isometrics called "brief maximal extensive isometric exercise" that is done by simultaneously tensing all the muscles in the body for 60 seconds. It can be done three times a day. They have found that the blood pressure does increase for five to eight weeks then the pressure dropped down to the normal ranges. I recommend that you talk to your doctor about this and investigate on line before trying this program.

Isometrics are an excellent way to work out, just keep in mind the possibility of increased pressure and how it may affect you. We want to get stronger but not at the expense of causing other medical complications.

Thomas the Train: The Nicest Train Ever

Who doesn't know Thomas the train? With a huge number of different stories and over sixty years of continuous success, there is virtually no place on earth that hasn't heard of the adventures of this little talking locomotive that resides on the magical island of Sodor. Thomas the Train and all of his friends have brought magic into children's lives for generations, and continue to do so tale after tale.

Thomas was born back in the year of 1943 when its creator Wilbert Awdry, a reverend who had been fond of trains since he was a small kid, began making up stories for his son Christopher, who was ill and had to rest in bed for quite a while. The stories were about a happy little locomotive named Thomas and some of his friends that consisted of different characters based on different models of locomotives.

His son soon became a fan of his father's stories, and as such he could remember every single detail of every single story. To preserve consistency between them, the reverend began taking notes about each character he made up and the key actions they performed, and soon he had an entire description of every single one of those characters including their moods and way of talking.

As little Christopher asked his father to tell him the stories once and again, the reverend soon memorized them and was able to tell them exactly the same way each time without even reading them.

In 1945, the reverend Awdry's wife encouraged him to get those stories published to entertain not only Christopher, but also a lot of other kids. Soon, they met a retired businessman that was looking for something to do in his retirement. That man's name was Edmund Ward. Mr. Ward decided to publish the Thomas the Train tales and soon the first book came out. It was a booming success.

Several years and twenty six Thomas the Train books later, reverend Awdry decided to stop writing because he was getting too old for that. He passed the torch to his son Christopher, who continued writing stories for the Thomas the Train series of books.

Nowadays, Thomas the Train stories are available worldwide, and have been translated into more than twenty languages. Pretty good for a talking train who has never left the island of Sodor!

Today, Thomas the Train has his own TV show and a complete line of merchandise for children. From DVD's and videos to toys and games, this small friend of all has really conquered the hearts of literally hundreds of thousand children not only across the world, but also across the years.

It really makes me happy to see that Thomas the Train and his stories still are able to charm the world. The kind of healthy entertainment and fun they provide is becoming rarer and rarer these days, and finding adequate stories for kids seems to be harder than ever. I hope we can enjoy Thomas the Train for many times to come, as I am sure that our grandchildren will be touched by the Thomas the Train stories just like we and our children are.

Learn How to Make a Portable Solar Panel Light Torch

Learning how to make a portable solar panel light torch is much more interesting than you think. Here's the question, what use is there for something that produces light that is powered by light? Until you realize that we can use batteries to store the energy, this is a crucial leap in understanding.

To make a portable solar panel light torch you'll need:

o 4 x 1.5 V Solar Cells
o 1 x AA 600 mAh NiCad battery
o 1N5817 Zener diode
o Carbon film resistor - 220 k ¼ W, 100 k ¼ W, 91 k ¼ W, 10 k ¼, 560 R ¼, 560 R ¼ and 2 x 3.3 R ¼ W
o NPN transistor - C9013, C9014 and C9015
o 300 pF ceramic capacitor
o 100 nF ceramic capacitor
o 1 nF ceramic capacitor
o 82 µH inductor
o CdS photocell 47 k @ 10 lux
o 2 x LEDs

A portable solar panel light torch is an extremely useful device to make and then leave on a sunny window sill. In the event of a power cut (don't assume that it won't happen, accidents do happen sometimes), you know that you can go to your trusty solar touch to provide you a light of hope in the darkness.

One of the things you need to think about if you are going to house your project in a round torch case, is that you will need to ensure that:

o The torch is weighted so that it rolls in such a way that the solar cell points upwards.
o There is a flat machined into the case, which ensures that the solar cell points upwards when the flat in the case rests on a level surface.

How to Calibrate a Hygrometer For a Cheese Humidor

In order to begin learning how to calibrate a hygrometer, you will need a small container which will hold one teaspoon of iodized salt. A completely flushed out laundry detergent bottle cap might be just the thing, or you could find something smaller still. To the level teaspoon of salt, and on a flat surface, add just enough water to produce a wet paste. You will want to be careful not to flood or over moisten the salt. If your hygrometer is digital, be sure to turn it on before proceeding. Analog and digital models should be clean and at the ready.

Your next step is to find an airtight storage container or sealable plastic storage bag that will easily fit both the cap of salt solution and the hygrometer that you mean to calibrate. Because this salt and water solution will always produce a humidity reading of 75%, this a fail proof way of testing and setting your hygrometer. Remember that the digital type hygrometers will most likely lack a way of resetting or calibrating the readings that they take, so will need to adapt to this using other means.

Once the bag or container has been sealed in an airtight manner with both the slat solution and the hygrometer, you will let it sit unopened for no less than 6 hours, with 7 hours being ideal. At this point, you will open the container and check the reading on the device. If your hygrometer is calibrated correctly, it should read within 2 degrees either way of 75%. If it does not read within this allotted range, your analog hygrometer will need to be adjusted with the use of a flat head screwdriver. For a digital misread, you will need to calculate how many degrees it is reading off by and add or subtract them each time your test your device.

Where Can I Buy Olympic Red Mittens?

This is probably one of the top 10 searches here in Canada and the answer is getting tiresome - sold out, sold out, no longer in stock. This is a huge disappointment to many proud Canadians, who are ready to start getting involved in the spirit of the Vancouver winter games in February 2010. We have somehow all fallen in love with the fuzzy red hand cozies, but when we try to buy a pair, we find ourselves unable to find them for sale.

The red mittens are supposed to be available at HBC, Zellers, on Amazon.com and at The Official Vancouver 2010 Store. So we are told, but countless disappointed people have spent many an evening or Saturday afternoon, going from one of these stores to the next, only to be informed everywhere that they are sold out in all of these locations at this point, March 2010.

Obviously, the governing bodies of the Olympic Retail Supply Universe have either gone on vacation or they are as dinosaur like as the government itself, when it comes to adjusting on its feet to a new demand or situation. Of course, we all know that that people in charge of these things are very busy with more important things to think about that whether there is a shortage of red mittens or not. Jeepers though! Why market the mitts until everyone has to have a pair if you don't have a proper supply to distribute? They have been sold out since around mid Oct, so why did they not order more at that point? Ah, we'll never understand these processes!

Millions of Canadians and millions of other nationalities around the world want their red mittens and they would like to have them right now. They want them for Christmas & other holiday gifts, for the patriotism that they want to express, for the trendy fashion accessory to wear at all the events of the Olympics, for the photo ops, the family Christmas card pics and so on.

What on earth is going on? Where are all the mittens?

Right now, you can find a pair of 2010 mitts at on-line red mitten stores in Canada & US. You will have to pay more than the $10 original price that was being charged at the retail outlets. Everyday, more of these private listings get posted, some are even being sold by a relay torch bearer! I would absolutely not part with my red mitts if I had worn them to carry the Olympic Flame! With the demand increasing and the supply dwindling, I wonder just how high the bidding will eventually go. Right now they are selling for $14 - $25 dollars CDN on eBay auctions, but at least we can get a pair.

Here is my wish - that someone at VanOC & the COC would try really really hard to get more mitts, so that everyone who wanted them could actually have a pair. Can it really be that difficult?

Barbados' Top-Rated Restaurants According to Zagat - Part 1

For its Barbados restaurant rankings, Zagat compiled input from 1,520 diners to judge. The following are tops in Barbados, according to Zagat. Are they really the very, very best? Here's what a serious foodie ... with a restaurant tab to prove it ... who's eaten at these places many times has to say.

Champers: Visitors and locals alike love Champers Wine Bar & Restaurant, which is why it was named Zagat's "Most Popular" culinary experience in Barbados. It is, too. You know how the most popular kid in school is remembered forever? Well, I have friends who hadn't been to Barbados in six years get off their plane from England and say, "Let's go to Champers tonight." Consistently terrific seafood and service at the water's edge on the south coast of the island. Christ Church, Rockley

The Tides: Fabulous seafood in a pretty blue décor that beautifully complements the seaside location. Great service, "consistently excellent," says Zagat's of this west coast, chef-owned restaurant. I've never been let down here; The Tides is always fabulous. It's also quite formal (for goodness' sake, no flip flops). Be sure to check out the wonderful art gallery there, too. St. James, Holetown

The Cliff: Popular for its romantic torch-lit cliff-side location and "truly special" food, The Cliff won Zagat's top score for décor and noted that its service matches its inventive eclectic fare. Yes, The Cliff is outstanding. What Zagat doesn't mention is that this is one of the very most expensive restaurants on the island; if you're price-sensitive, go to Champers instead.  St. James, Derricks

Zen: Go early and take a sunset walk on the award-winning pink-sand beach at the Crane Resort where Zen is located on the southeast of Barbados. That's unfortunately all you'll see of the ocean because it's not visible from most tables inside the restaurant. This is what holds me back from dining more frequently at this otherwise excellent restaurant. Zen received Zagat's top score in Barbados for food thanks to "simply awesome" Japanese-Thai cuisine, including amazing sushi. St. Philip, Crane Beach Hotel

Pisces: On the sea and revered for its "wonderful menu using the best local fish" and offered at "what can be considered reasonable prices for Barbados." I agree: Pisces is terrific for other reasons as well: It has an appealing casualness; it's within walking distance of many holiday rentals on the south coast; and, because it's in the heart of the lively St. Lawrence Gap, you can choose from a number of other wonderful restaurants in the immediate area as well. My only complaint is that I've experienced very slow service at Pisces. But then we're in the Caribbean ...  Christ Church

Check out five more restaurants in Part 2 of my look at Zagat's Barbados restaurant ratings. With choices like these, any foodie visiting the island will go home happily sated ... with a restaurant tab to prove it.

Thinking of Buying a Second-hand Piano Privately?

Hundreds of second-hand pianos change hands privately every year. Only a mall number are in good playing condition. We know for buying second-hand pianos and preparing them for resale is an important part of our business. Of the many pianos offered to us we actually buy fewer than one in ten of them - and almost every one needs work on it to a greater or lesser extent

When looking for a piano it is important to remember two things.

Pianos are not all of the same quality.

Before 1914, in the boom years of piano sales, huge numbers were made in small workshops to satisfy the demand for cheap pianos. They were of poor quality when new and hundreds are still around, several generations later, in dreadful condition.

There were some excellent pianos made in the 1920's and 1930's. They are now 60,70,80, years old - nearly old age in the lifespan of a piano. If they have been well maintained during their life they can still be good instruments, but if they have been neglected or abused they will be tired, second rate pianos.

Some will be "the family heirloom" passed down through several generations, much loved but often unplayed and neglected. Such pianos may have sentimental value to their owners but their true worth, as a playing piano, may be nil.

Pianos do not last forever
A piano is made up of around 5000 parts many of which move. Although enormously strong and heavy it is very complicated and sensitive to damp, dryness, changes in temperature, wear and tear and neglect.

A good piano, well maintained, has much the same useful lifespan as a human - few are in really good shape after 80 years! Remember that the piano you buy will probably be the only one you ever buy so look for the youngest and best quality instrument you can find.

So What Should I Look For In A Second-hand Piano?
Very few people have any technical knowledge about pianos. The list below will give you an idea of some of the problems often found in second-hand pianos.

Sticking keys or hammers
This is usually the result of being in a damp atmosphere. The felt absorbs moisture, swells and movement is restricted. If only one or two notes are sticking it may be possible to ease them. If lots are sticking the action (i.e. the moving parts inside the piano) probably needs to be dismantled and rebuilt. Expensive!

Noisy keys or noise from the action
A sign of wear. A tuner may be able to make adjustments to lessen the unwanted noises but if it is badly worn a rebuild will be required.

Hard Tone
Probably the result of worn and compressed hammer felts. If they are not too badly worn they may be able to be reshaped. Really heavily worn hammers cannot be treated in this way and new hammerheads need to be fitted.

Dull, dead tone
This may be partially due to worn hammers but is more likely to indicate that the piano strings have lost their original suppleness and need replacing. This is a major undertaking and only high quality pianos can justify the cost.

The dull tone may also be the result of splits having developed in the wooden soundboard. These can be repaired but, again, it is only worth doing this to really good pianos.

Out of tune
Every piano goes out of tune as the tension in the strings changes slightly. If the entire piano is out of tune it is probably because it has not been tuned for some time. Depending upon how far it has fallen below pitch one or more tunings should put this right.

If, However, only one section of a few notes is really very badly out of tune and is clearly very much worse than the rest of the piano, this signals really problems. IT si likely that the tuning plank has lost its ability to hold the tuning pins tightly enough to keep tension on the strings. It is common on pianos made before the 1960's. They were not built to withstand the dry atmospheres created by modern central heating systems. The timber loses moisture and shrinks, the pins go slack and the piano is beyond economical repair and useless for playing purposes. Avoid at all costs.

Woodworm
More common in older pianos. They attack the timber - look for small holes and tiny heaps of wood dust. To check, the piano needs to be dismantled as far as practicable and closely examined with a torch. Look behind it and under the keyboard. Avoid anything that has or has had woodworm.

Moths and mice
Damage the felt hammers, dampers and key washers. Minor damage is not important but extensive damage is costly to put right.

Cracked frames
The strings are carried on a cast iron frame. Examine the entire frame carefully with a torch. Although cracked frames are not common, should the frame be cracked the piano is a write off.

Uneven piano keys
Kneel down until your eyes are level with the piano keys. They should be level along the whole length. If they are not they will need to be adjusted by a skilled piano tuner to make the piano easier to play.

If the keys form an arc with either a rise or a depression in the centre it is probable that the wooden frame on which the keys sit has warped. Avoid.

Pedals not working
The pedals are connected to the action by levers. If the levers are dislodged the "loud" or "soft" pedals will not work. Relatively simple to put right but best done by a piano tuner.

Casework
The condition of the casework has no bearing on whether the piano plays properly or not. The heart of the piano is inside - the casework is largely decorative. A clean attractive case can conceal a total wreck inside. Never buy a second hand piano just because the case work looks good or will match your room.

If you do find a piano which plays well but has casework in poor condition remember that although pianos can be stripped and repolished the cost is such that only pianos of really good quality can ever justify the expense.

Avoid
* Pianos with fretwork fronts - very old
* Pianos with candlesticks or candlestick marks (look carefully). They are likely to be at least 90 years old.
* Pianos with flowers and garlands inlaid. Pretty but again pre-1914.
* Pianos with heavily carved legs
* Pianos with wooden pedals with brass button ends
* Pianos advertised as "suit beginner". They are almost without exception dreadful pianos which the owner wants to get rid of and are usually totally unsuitable for any pianist.
* Pianos with wooden frames.
* Pianos stored in garages or outhouses. We've yet to come across one in decent condition after being stored in an outhouse.
* Pianos which have not been tuned or played for years.

Buy if possible
Overstrung pianos i.e. the bass and treble strings cross over each other
Pianos which were new from the 1950's on. They are best in central heating
Pianos which have been regularly tuned and maintained. Ask who the piano tuner is and check with him on the condition of the piano - he will remember it.

Extra costs
Remember that in addition to the cost of the piano you will have the expense of

Advertising
* Following up any pianos offered (mileage, time and frustration!)
* Transport, especially if stairs are involved
* Tuning once in your home
* Essential repairs recommended by the tuner

Together this generally adds up to around £200 and my be very much more if your piano needs a lot of work.

Expert Advice
The person selling the piano may genuinely be unaware of the faults in their piano (and some may well be aware but say nothing!) Before you buy privately please, please ask a reputable independent piano tuner to check the piano for you. He will charge you for this but may save you wasting money through buying a bad piano. We regret that because we may well be competing against you to purchase the piano in which you are interested we cannot be considered to be impartial and cannot provide this service.

How much should I pay?
An impossible question to answer since the value depends upon its original quality, present condition, age and how much it will cost to bring it into proper playing condition.

One word of advice though- never, ever buy a piano simply because it is cheap. Cheap pianos are cheap because they are usually worthless as playing instruments. There may be rare cases where good quality pianos are sold below their true market value but your chance of coming across this kind of bargain is about the same as winning the lottery.

Equally do not think that by paying more to a private seller that it guarantees that you are buying a good quality piano. Most piano owners have a greatly inflated idea of how much their piano is worth and ask a price which may have no relation to its age, condition or true value.

We have to repeat - before you part with money please get a report from an independent tuner.
