Selecting a Good Quality Dive Torch

Scuba diving lights are used in a variety of different circumstances, such as night dives, wreck or cave diving, or even used lighting up an overcast day. Using your dive light on a dive will help bring back the real colors that are lost at depths and there is always that crack or crevice that will need lighting up.

Safety in diving is important and that is why every diver should carry at least two torches (three if your cave diving) and once your primary light has failures a dive should be called off.

Typically your primary light will be a much brighter light than your back up and it is tempting for the brighter is better when it comes to selecting the correct lighting for your dive trip. For example if the water has lots of particulars floating around you may find that if your light is too bright you will only be lighting up the particulars in the water and this will actually make it harder too see.

Even a underwater photographers will not use too bright a light as it will scare of fishes and may cause hot spots with the pictures. A 30W LED light will be adequate for any photography lighting.

Recreational divers who may be using them for night and day dives will find that a 5W LED light should be good enough for there needs. However a cave diver or wreck diver may need something a little stronger.

Understanding your needs before diving, a cheap $30 dive torch will work but will never give you the brightness or durability that you will need. For torches it worth investing in a good durable metal casing torch that will give you at less several years of use. Last thing you want is your torch failing when your doing your next night dive.

After durability the burn time is important, look for torches that will give you a burn time of at least twice as long as you want to dive. Consider the batteries that are used too, regular batteries can end costing a lot on a 5 day live on board. Several torches now a days use rechargeable batteries that will last you for ever.

Finally look at depth ratings, some torches are good for only 30m or less and with repeated dives at around that depth can fail and leak easily. Consider buying a land yard to ensure you will not lose your torch.

Take the above points into consideration when buying your next torch and you will find a good quality torch that will last longer. Remember investing in a good quality torch will make your dives more pleasurable.

Repairing Dents on a Car

There are few things that can ruin the looks of your car and a dent is one of them. Reporting the incident to the insurance company will definitely increase the rates. Having a dented car is definitely not fun and repairing them at the local body shop can indeed be very expensive. Another issue of travelling without transportation is also present when the repairing is being done. Luckily, there are some methods that can be tried at home that are not very expensive and are fairly easy. Follow the fairly simple DIY methods.

- Plunger
- Rubber Hammer
- Air Duster
- Dry Ice
- Hairdryer
- Torch

Method 1:
First, use a plunger to suck out the dents. This method is an old and reliable. The plunger has to be placed on the center of the dent and then pushed in, this is just similar method for a blocked toilet. This will often not work in the first attempt so continue. This particular method is good for smaller dents and those dents where it is somehow impossible to get behind. However there is no guarantee in this method whether the paint will be saved. The plunger option is recommended if your budget is low for spending on this project.

Method 2:
Dry ice can be used, it is a pretty cheap and available easily. Simply place the block of ice on top of the dented area and the ice will slowly pull out the dent. The process has to be repeated until the dent finally vanishes. Make sure that you are wearing protective gear like hand gloves because this ice is hazardous and can severely burn the skin. The paint will usually not get damaged by this method.

Method 3:
Tackle the dent using household items. Using a hair dryer is another method, heat the dented area for about a minute and then quickly spray the whole area using an air duster. The hot and cold combination will create a type if suction and the dent will pop out within a few minutes. There will be minimal damage to the paint job.

Method 4:
A hammer can also be used to bang the dent out. You would have to reach behind the dent. The metal gets stretched by denting so it is best for softening the metal before the hammer is used. The area will not look right if the metal is not softened. In case of a chrome surface, an acetylene torch can be used for eating the area. Don't make the metal very hot. When the area is heated the dent can be lightly bumped out from the other side. Once the dent is recovered, place a cloth that is soaked in ice water to help it cool down the surface. It is better to use a rubber mallet rather than using a metal hammer because it will have a gentle effect to the car.

DIY methods are usually more economical than sending a car to the professionals. Hopefully they will help to solve the problem.

- Always wear protective gear like eye goggles, gloves and a breathing mask when using chemicals.
- Some dents contain scratches and the paint needs to be recovered. If there is damage on the paint then conventional car sprayers can be used. These are easily available in the market depending of the color of the car.

The Nike Air Max Torch 5 was an excellent purchase. I run every day in them and I will by buying a couple more once these wear out. They are comfortable, light, stable and much more, all that is needed in a running shoe. I do not regret my purchase one bit and you will not either.

Flashlight Energy Conservation

Flashlights are handy, hand-held devices, which can provide light when the power goes off. They run on batteries. So, for flash bulbs to be useful in times of emergency one needs to store batteries also. Flashlights came into use in the last decade of nineteenth century. At that time, it was used for providing fancy light arrangement. Later some suave businesspersons suddenly realized its potential as a source of light when electric current is not available and marketed flashlights in the form that is found today. In those times, the form of flashlights was very crude. The battery did not have that much charge storage capacity as of today and the bulb consumed more power. As a result, most flash bulbs in those times only provided a flash of light for a short duration and then went dead. Hence, the device got the name "flashlight." This name got really struck in North America. In other continents, especially in commonwealth countries, it is known as torch light or electric torch.

As already mentioned, the source of energy in most of the flashlights is a battery. It may be normal batteries, rechargeable batteries or solar powered batteries. Even with the technological advances of this age, there is a limit to the amount of power can be stored in the battery that can be fitted into a hand-held flashlight. So the efforts to conserve energy in a flash light have been focusing on reducing the energy utilized by the flash light. Traditionally incandescent bulbs were used as source of light. Such bulbs are still in use. But it has been found that the energy-spending rate of incandescent bulbs is much more than that of some other forms of light source, say light emitting diodes (LEDs). But the problem with LEDs was that the brightness and intensity of light emitted by LEDs were very low comparing to that of fluorescent bulbs. Scientist did extensive research on this subject and conducted numerous experiments to enhance the brightness and intensity of the light produced by LEDs. Finally, they succeeded and a new form of flashlights was born.

There are many advantages LED bulbs have over incandescent lamps. The main advantage in energy conservation is that they utilize less energy than conventional types because they do not contain a filament. LEDs are basically a transistor and work on electronics principles. The life span of LED bulbs is much more than that of incandescent bulbs. LED bulbs can be controlled electronically so as to maintain a fixed level of light intensity irrespective of the amount of power stored in the battery. This is not possible with incandescent lamps. Further experiments aimed at energy conservation in flashlights have led to the advent of self-powered flashlights that do not need a battery and high intensity discharge (HID) flashlights.
