Caribbean Cruise Activities - Snorkeling in the Caribbean

The islands of the Caribbean are an ideal place for people who enjoy water sports, not least because of the calm tranquil seas and warm tropical climate. Visitors to the region will find no shortage of aquatic and nautical activities to indulge in, but snorkeling is probably the watersport that is most accessible to holidaymakers, as it doesn't require amazing swimming abilities to enjoy it.

This means that it is an activity that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and the best part is that it won't leave a huge hole in the family finances! Snorkeling in the Caribbean is an excellent way to experience, up close, the beautiful and rich marine life to be seen in the Caribbean.

Good snorkeling requires clear waters because some creatures can only be seen at night. You may well be familiar with the equipment needed for night snorkeling; in addition to the torch needed to sort the teeming marine life, snorkelers also need to have a special light tied around their waist to make their presence known to boats which might be in the area.

Snorkeling, even in the Caribbean, is not a new activity, but the growing trend of seeing things underwater (in glass bottom boats, for example) has led to many more taking up snorkeling whilst on holiday. There are several other reasons for the surge in interest in snorkeling in the Caribbean: One key reason is the huge variety of sea life to be seen in Caribbean waters: all kinds of fish, including flying fish, stingrays, jellyfish, and a wonderfully vast range of plant life; all of this can be seen up-close by snorkelers.

Snorkeling may not be a dangerous, high risk, "extreme" in the same league as bungee jumping or mountain climbing or whitewater rafting, but that doesn't mean that it is lacking as an adventure or a voyage of discovery. Many visitors to the Caribbean have been enchanted by the array of creatures that live beneath the surface of the water.

There are some risks however: Be careful not to get too close to coral, which can cut very easily and keep clear of creatures such as eels and sea urchins. If these risks can be avoided, trouble-free, pleasurable snorkeling is assured!
