TIG Welding Torch - Which One Do I Need?

A TIG torch is a TIG torch. Right? Not so fast.

There are many different styles of TIG welding torches and if you get the wrong one, its like buying shoes that don't fit...painful. So which TIG torch do you need? First of all, you need to decide whether to go with air cooled or water cooled.

If you are a hobbyist welder, air cooled is the way to go. Why? For one thing, water coolers cost around 600 dollars and air cooled TIG torches dont need a water cooler. That's why.

Once you decide between an air cooled vs water cooled torch, then you still have some decisions to make. Like whether to get a big TIG torch or a small one, a TIG welding torch with a gas valve built in or without, a flex head vs a rigid head, a 12 foot vs or a 25 foot torch, etc.

Here is a list of suggestions to guide you to buying the right TIG torch for your situation:

If you need portability, a 25 foot torch is the way to go.
For portable situations that require fairly high amperage like aluminum TIG welding, the big style air cooled torches like a number 17 or 26 are in order.
For small precise and low amperage situations, a small gas cooled torch like a wp9 works great.
If you are using a TIG welding inverter like a Miller Dynasty 200 DX or a Lincoln Invertec V205t, you may only need a 12 foot torch because the machine itself can be positioned close to the work.
If you can afford it, a coolant re-circulator like a Miller Coolmate opens up your options and lets you use pretty much any TIG welding torch you want.
